Vegan 1461 Oxford Shoes for Unisex Adults

Our iconic unisex 3-eye shoe, crafted for industry and made rebellious by generations of non-conformists, is now 100% vegan. Dr. Martens has become the stuff of legends, tracing its origins back to 1945 near Munich, Germany.

It all began when Dr. Klaus Maertens sustained a foot injury while skiing in the Bavarian Alps. To ease his healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole, using old rubber tires and creating soles with trapped air compartments. Dr. Maertens showcased his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes.

The innovative footwear not only solved the doctor's immediate problem but also gained popularity in Germany. By 1959, the two collaborators recognized the need for a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then known as Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world.

Initially, many manufacturers were skeptical, dismissing the air-cushioned sole as a fleeting gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, embraced the idea and created the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On April 1, 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot, named 1460, was produced.

To better sell the brand name in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens, and the range was branded AirWair – a legacy that continues to this day.
